thaTEC:OS update 2020-05 → changing to the HDF5 file format

Changes and new features

In May 2020, a major update of thaTEC:OS was released. The version ‘thaTEC:OS HDF5’, which was being tested for several months, now replaces the previous version. Thus, the version ‘thaTEC:OS HDF5’ is obsolete and will be removed from the device library within the next weeks.
As already indicated by the name, one of the most important changes is the used file format. The previously used binary data files are replaced by the Hierarchical Data Format 5 (HDF5). More information on the data format itself can be found here.

Major changes:

Arranging elements in the process definition:
To rearrange device functions in the process definition (on the right hand side of the user interface) the Ctrl key must be pressed while moving elements up/down via the up/down arrow keys. Without pressing Ctrl, the marked element will be changed. Indentation (left/right arrow keys) can still be adjusted without pressing the Ctrl key.

Repetitions:
Repetitions (setting an array of control values multiple times) have been removed from the Regions Of Interests (ROI) and are now available via the right-click menu in the process definition tree (on the right hand side of the user interface) via InsertRepetitions. The newly inserted element can then be used as a control and indented functions will be repeated as often as set by the user.

Scan dimensions:
While the previous version was limited to 3 scan dimensions, the updated version can be used with arbitrary scan dimensions, allowing for very high-dimensional automated measurements.

Data export:
From now on, data will also be exported again using the HDF5 file format. In particular, due to the potential very high dimensionality of the measurement data, the mass export to csv-files is not available any more. But since he HDF5 format is widely used, tools like Origin or via the programming interfaces to all major languages including Python, Matlab, and LabVIEW, measurement and exported data files can be directly read using the tools of your choice.
